Is my pool leaking?
Help! My water has gone down and I think I may have a leak in my pool.
As a seasoned pool cleaning company, Clearwater Pool Shop know how alarming it can be to discover water dripping, pooling, or disappearing from your pool and equipment. A leak can happen at any time without warning. And while a small leak may seem harmless at first, it can quickly turn into a much larger issue if left unaddressed.
First and foremost – don’t panic. We understand how stressful a leak can be, as your backyard oasis starts looking more like a money pit. But with some detective work and prompt repairs, your pool can be plugged up and back to holding water properly.
Before assuming it’s a leak, perform a simple bucket test to determine if normal evaporation could be the cause of the water loss. Here’s how:
- First, make sure your pool is filled to its normal level.
- Fill a bucket with pool water, leaving about 3 cm from the top
- Leave the bucket on the first step of your pool
- Mark the water level on the inside of the bucket
- Shut off your pool pump
- Mark the water level both inside and outside of the bucket.
- Turn your pump back on so it can continue operating normally
- Compare both levels after 24 hours have passed
If the pool water level that’s indicated by the mark on the outside of the bucket is lower than the water level indicated by the mark on the inside of the bucket, you most likely have a leak on your hands. Feel free to perform the test again if you feel that it’s necessary. Keep in mind that the test is no longer valid if it rains or the water levels are checked after a 24-hour period.
If a leak is detected, pinpointing the exact location is step one. Look for wet spots or dripping near pool fittings, jets, light fixtures and drains first. Also inspect around the pump, filter, and underground plumbing lines. Check the pool liner or plaster for wet areas if an above-ground source isn’t found.
Specialised leak detection services like ours use advanced technology to locate hidden leaks. Things like digital imaging, thermal photography, and underwater cameras make finding even the smallest leaks possible.
