Why is my pool green and cloudy?

It’s that dreaded moment every pool owner encounters at some point – you go to enjoy a refreshing dip only to find your beautiful backyard oasis has transformed into a murky, green pond. Your heart sinks as you stare at the cloudy water, which just days ago was clear and inviting. What happened, and what can be done?

As a pool cleaning service with decades of experience under our belts, Clearwater Pool Shop know firsthand how discouraging this phenomenon can be. A green, cloudy pool simply doesn’t provide the same relaxation and enjoyment that crystal clear water does. It ends up becoming an eyesore and source of stress rather than a place for fun if left untreated.

The most common cause of green, cloudy water is an overgrowth of algae. While algae spores are always naturally present in pool water, issues arise when chlorine levels drop too low or the pH balance gets out of whack. This allows the algae to rapidly spread uncontrolled, turn the water murky, and put a damper on your pool plans.

The good news is with the right approach, you can get your pool back to its sparkling glory in no time. Here are our top tips for tackling cloudy, green pool water:

  • Shock the pool with a high dose of chlorine – This helps kill off the algae bloom causing the cloudiness. We recommend using 0.5-1 kg of shock per 10,000 litres of water.
  • Run the filter for extended cycles – This helps capture all the dead algae so it doesn’t rot in the water. Clean out the filter afterward.
  • Brush walls and floors – This prevents algae spores from reattaching and reblooming. Pay extra attention to the walls.
  • Test and adjust chlorine/pH levels – After shocking, chlorine levels may need to be raised to between 2-4 ppm. pH should be 7.2-7.6.
  • Consider algaecides if needed – These help kill both free-floating and musty algae and prevent regrowth.
  • Be patient – It can take a few days for the pool water to clear up after shocking and adjusting chemistry. Don’t lose hope!

Take the time to properly get your water crystal clear again, then stay on top of regular chlorine and pH checks to prevent repeat algae blooms. Your pool will soon be that beloved backyard oasis once more. Contact our team anytime on 0426 998 908 for personalised assistance – we’re here to help pool owners enjoy their backyards again!
